Recommendation 212

Developing standards for healthcare support workers

Not accepted - agree with principle
The code of conduct, education and training standards and requirements for registration for healthcare support workers should be prepared and maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Council after due consultation with all relevant stakeholders, including the Department of Health, other regulators, professional representative organisations and the public.

We intend to achieve the intention behind this by ensuring that organisations have the right staff with the right skills to deliver care in a safe way.

This recommendation is a step toward regulation (see recommendation 209) and for the same reasons, we are rejecting this recommendation. The Nursing and Midwifery Council also have no remit for codes of conduct for social care or health care support workers. The Cavendish Review recognises the importance of the development of education and training standards which are being developed further.

No further update required. Please see response to the recommendation above
